Spawning at Nishikigoi Niigata Direct - video

As detailed a couple of times over the last 48 hours or so spawning was scheduled to get under way at NND last night.

Getting set for spawning at NND

Oyagoi set for action at NND

I was a little late getting to Marusho Koi Farm last night, perhaps 9.20pm, however I hadn't missed anything, the Koi were 'sniffing' at one another but no more.

As it was a natural spawning with no intervention involved, and no iminent action, at 10pm Makoto san and Oomo san decided to retire for the night, I did likewise, to their amazement I said I'd be back at around 6.30am.

I in fact woke up at 4.30am and decided to head up to Yamogihira.  When I arrived shortly after 5am Makoto san's mother already had the doors of the home wide open on what was a lovely bright morning, the mountains shrouded in mist.

Peaking in the Koi house it was clear spawning had taken place, the water a little 'frothy' and a distinctive fishy smell in the air.  Indeed the Koi were rather subdued, occasional splashes from the 2 sets of Showa, the Sanke clearly finished.

Shortly after Makoto san arrived having been up and around the mountain mudponds to confirm everything had gone to plan.

Somewhat tired I made my way home via Mushigame amazed at the number of people out and about, walking dogs, running, cycling, and just generally milling around in preparation for the day ahead.

You can see a 12min 13sec video starting with the pairing of the oyagoi below.
