Ojiya Auction and Open Koi Sale
Posted 18 Oct 2009 - 19:18 by Mark Gardner
First action of the day, admitedly not until midday, was the auction and open sale held at Ojiya Gymnasium.
A considerable amount of work and effort had obviously gone into arranging this event which was, quite probably, best described as a disaster.
You may recall the auction held back in April - http://www.niigata-nishikigoi.com/node/357. That auction was for dealers only, today's sale was open to all, dealers actually seemed conspicuous by their absense it has to be said.
Most of the vats below contained 'open sale' Koi. A few had contained the auction Koi that were on display before the auction started.
The auction took place under the blue and white stripped tent beneath which bidders sat either side of the Koi being auctioned.
The picture below says it all, the bidding stuck on 10,000 yen, the opening price.
I have no idea why the event was so poorly attended, that surely impacted the level of prices which were, quite frankly, disastrously low, take for example the extremely clean 67cm Yamabuki Ogon that went for 25,000 yen, about £175 or the sansai Torazo Kohaku, harvested just yesterday, that went for 10,000 yen!

Hi Mark. I had recently discovered your blog and im reading it completely backwards.
Can you explain why the asistance in the auction was so poor?
Is just a coincidental reason or is a trend because of the market or something like that?
Thanks for your answer and sincerely congratulations for your work in the blog.

Hi Renzo
As I commented in the original post, I actually have no idea why the attendance was so low.
The auction which took place in March 2010 was far better attended with better prices achieved.
