My top 5 contenders
Posted 29 Jan 2009 - 19:53 by Mark Gardner
Just back from the Ryutsu Centre where most of the Nishikigoi for the 2009 All Japan are in.
I have to say GC is tough call this year, some of those posted yesterday could be discarded straight away.
Thereafter there is nothing that is particularly clear cut, it could go a number of ways.
Here are my personal top 5 contenders for GC.......

not the first three
Can Kato's Nogami Kohaku take the title? It would be a nice win for Katosan.
My previous information was incorrect, it's not Kato san's.
I love the showa but, from the single photo's we have, I don't think it will be in the 1, 2, 3.
The sanke really lights my fire and the two kohakus, never been keen on the middle kohaku, the way the middle beni finishes so high on the body 'narks' me...
So I'm going sanke, followed by the two kohaku's...
The Sanke looks real GOOD! It should win this year title.
I also like the LAST Kohaku. My second choice.

That Sanke is AWESOME, also like the Kohaku. Mark, how big is the Kohaku?
Oh wait, I just saw both have red in the eyes, they cant win.
Just kidding I think Momotaro might win this.

I think the Sanke will win too.

Mark,
I know all are over 90bu, if the size is right my vote is:
1) Rinukai Kohaku
2) Dainichi Kohaku
3) Yamatoya Showa
My choice as favourite would be the Showa because its MY favourite varierty, I just dont think it has the volume like the Kohakus (unless its just the pictures).
Do you feel thats its time yet for a Momotaro Koi to win the AJS?
It looks impressive enough but its dependent on the votes (you know what I mean).
Like me, you will remember the wonderful Sanke that was there last year that never got a look in, it was head and heels the best Koi there and as you know went on to win the 1st prestigous Asia Show.
Just my thoughts

You'll have seen the Showa last year, it was one of the 5 nominations from the last ballot.
In Autumn 2007 it was harvested from one of Maruju's mud ponds where it had overwintered. The body, skin, shiroji, beni were all good. The sumi wasn't.
In 2008 the customer kept it in his own concrete pond, the sumi is great, the body not so. It will, be best in variety Showa, if no higher prize awaits it I am sure. It was a Koi that attracted a lot of attention from breeders and dealers present today so a sure contender.
With regards to Momotaro. Tepsit's Sanke last year is one of the most beautiful Koi I've witnessed, second only to the 2007 GC Dainichi Showa. I don't think this Sanke is a patch on it, personally.
However, it's serious quality, 8 years old, 103cms. I stick by it as my prediction to take the 2009 crown.
In just 10/11 hours we'll know, well at least I will!! ;-)

The showa gets my vote from the photos.
Oh no, A shiro is not in the mix again--someday???
I imagine that the Showa will win but I do like the Sanke
