Maruju Koi Farm was originally started by Jukichi Tanaka over 50 years ago. Jukichi Tanaka specialised in producing Showa, developing the original Maruju bloodline, a line still used at the farm today. The farm is now run by Jukichi's son, Shigeo Tanaka, although Jukichi, now in his 80's, still takes an active interest in what is going on and can often be found undertaking culling during the summer months. Maruju Koi Farm is a real family business, Shigeo's wife is can always be found in the farm's office, and their 3 sons, Shigeyoshi, Yasuyuki and Mitsugu are very much responsible for day to day business. Shigeyoshi spent some time working in the UK in his early 20's and speaks excellent English. He is taking an ever greater role in developing the family business. Maruju Koi Farm, somewhat uniquely, specialise in producing Tancho varieties, specifically Tancho Kohaku, Gin Rin Tancho Kohaku and Tancho Goshiki, pairing male and female Tancho's together to increase emergence of Tancho offspring. Their Goshiki are also achieving considerable recognition, taking best in variety at the 2008 All Japan Koi Show. Maruju Koi Farm lost nearly everything on the 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake. The family home, which stood where the present office and warehouse are, was destroyed and, due to the instability of the land, they had to relocate. Thankfully their oyagoi largely survived the trauma of the earthquake. Maruju's emphasis at the moment in on producing strong, healthy Koi for the worldwide market. Along with the aforementioned Showa, Tancho and Goshiki, the farm also produces Doitsu Showa, Gin Rin Kohaku, Kohaku and Koromo varieties. |
